Thanks a Bunch, Dad: Jesse James Apologizes to Kids, Sandy

March 18, 2010

Those puppy-dog eyes just might convince us that he's truly sorry.

BREAKING NEWS: Jesse James has issued a statement apologizing to wife Sandra Bullock and his children for his alleged infidelities: “There is only one person to blame for this whole situation, and that is me. It’s because of my poor judgment that I deserve everything bad that is coming my way. This has caused my wife and kids pain and embarrassment beyond comprehension and I am extremely saddened to have brought this on them. I am truly very sorry for the grief I have caused them. I hope one day they can find it in their hearts to forgive me.”

Either Jesse is putting on an act deserving of an Oscar like the one his wife just nabbed, or there’s real repentance in that there TV host’s heart.

I kind of wanna believe the guy. —JGZ

Celeb Kid Hangout: L.A.’s Coldwater Canyon Park

March 18, 2010

What’s the deal with L.A.’s Coldwater Canyon Park? Is there Kool-Aid in the drinking fountain? Whatever the draw, Hollywood’s youngest residents can’t seem to keep away. On Sunday, Dannielynn Birkhead, daughter of Anna Nicole Smith, was there with dad Larry Birkhead. Other recent sightings at Coldwater Canyon: Halle Berry and Nahla, Jennifer Garner with Violet and Serafina, Amanda Peet and daughter Frances, and Jessica Alba with daughter Honor.

I suspect they go for the sparkling-clean, and awesomely engaging playground, but the 45-acre retreat also features unbeatable views of the San Fernando Valley, nearly endless hiking trails, an arboretum, a tree nursery, and, if you time your visit right, eco-tours.

Which is fine if you live in L.A. But I’m in NYC — where, finally, spring has arrived! So pardon me for now. My toddler and I, sunglasses in hand, are heading out to our own version of Coldwater Canyon: a stroll on the Highline, followed by a quick trip to the nearby swings.

And if we spot any celebs? You’ll be the first to hear about it.

Where do you head when the weather turns warm?

What a Disick-head (But He’s Doing His Best): So Sayeth Kris Jenner

March 18, 2010

No one thought Scott Disick would stick around for the long haul when girlfriend Kourtney Kardashian announced she was pregnant with his baby. After all, the two had had a volatile relationship that was often showcased on Meet the Kardashians. Even Kourtney’s mom, Kris Jenner, wasn’t too keen on her future grandson’s dad, claiming that there was “no place” in the family for Scotty-not-so-hotty.

But now that baby Mason has arrived, Scott’s possible future mother-in-law has come around, saying in US that he’s “trying to be a good dad, trying to be a good boyfriend.” Jenner continues to gush, “It’s a lot to handle when you have a brand-new baby, no matter what your situation is,” Jenner says. “I admire him for being a great dad and for working hard at his relationship with Kourtney.”

If only it had been that easy for these other romantically challenged stars, whose parents never quite thought their significant others were up to snuff:

Jamie and Lynn Spears were none too thrilled when Britney brought dancer Kevin Federline home. Things seemed to get even more tense when Brit-Brit married the bad boy and bore two children by him. But when the pop singer’s mental state went south, Lynn Spears actually bonded with her son-in-law (to the point where Britney accused her of having an affair with Federline) and helped him out with Sean Preston and Jaden James while Britney was on the mend.

Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey seemed a match made in boy-band/girl crooner heaven. Until, that is, Jessica’s dad, Joe, started interfering not only in their business affairs (Joe was Jessica’s manager), but also in their marital bliss. Lachey even went so far as to insinuate Joe was responsible for the demise of his marriage to Jess. Joe denies he ever played that critical of a role in the failed nuptials—this coming from a guy who micromanaged his daughter’s every move and openly admired her ample bosom. I’m leaning toward Nick on this one.

Amy Winehouse’s parents were openly distraught over the entire course of their baby’s legal union to drugged-out Blake Fielder-Civil. Janis Winehouse wrote an open public letter to her daughter, begging her to come home and get the support she needed from her family to break free of her own addictions. Mitch Winehouse told British TV show This Morning, “I want Blake and his family out of our lives. I just hope Amy can stay away from him. It’s the only chance she has. Blake’s a destructive influence on her life. And he’s a liar.” Don’t hold back, Mitch.

Dina never had a problem with Samantha Ronson, but Lindsay’s dad, Michael (always the epitome of thoughtful restraint), went to town on more than one occasion against his daughter’s girlfriend. Among his main offenses: blasting Ronson on his blog (“Personally, I think she is dark, hideous and a disgusting representation of humanity!”) and accusing the DJ of being a gold-digger and the cause of all of Lindsay’s problems in the news media. These problems couldn’t have started at home, could they, Mike?

Kourtney’s Mom: Love My Grandson. His Dad? Not So Much

March 18, 2010

Everyone’s happy here – but that’s only because Kourtney Kardashian and boyfriend Scott Disick are in one picture, and Kris Jenner, Kourtney’s mom, is nowhere near.

“I’m fine with Scott,” Kris told E! Online, because “he’s in Miami while the girls film Kourtney and Khloe, and I’m in L.A., so it’s perfect! I’m relieved.”

She adds that while the off-and-on-again couple are happy now raising baby Mason together, she hopes they won’t hurry to add a sibling to the mix. “I think one is just enough for them,” she says.  (Translation: “I don’t want to be tied to this guy any more than I have to be!”)

Still, Kris is a devoted grandma who cries every time Kourtney sends a new picture of the baby. “I’m sad he’s all the way in Miami,” she admits.   – SA

GET THIS: Celeb Kids in Striped Tights! Hello Sunny James!

March 18, 2010

Thought there was nothing left to say (until more grisly details are realeased) about Sandra Bullock and Jesse James? You’re wrong. The littlest member of the James crew, Jesse’s daughter Sunny, made her own news this morning. Simply by stepping out in a pair of striped tights, she’s placed herself squarely on the list of young celeb-kid fashionistas. And we’d like to issue her a warm welcome.

Winter is on the wane, which means that you only have about ten more seconds to copy this look for your little ones. So get cracking! Because striped tights are today’s go-to accessory for the celeb tots (and wannabe-celeb tots, and tots of celeb-obsessed mums) of the moment.

Busy Philipps brought Birdie to the Cougartown set last month in a pair.

Zahara Jolie-Pitt rocked a set of stripes — from an H & M collection!

And Hugh Jackman’s daughter, Ava, recently stretched out in stripes on the streets of N.Y.C. (and voila: our requisite daily Hugh & Ava photo).

Want your own? No need to miss this trend: Amazon can deliver these Country Kids Double Trouble Striped Tights overnight:

March 18, 2010

Meg Ryan and daughter Daisy True were spotted yesterday in New York, looking both bespectacled and chic. I am so very LOVING Daisy’s darling swing coat.

Hmm…do I dare get this for my 4-year-old daughter and hope the weather doesn’t get too warm before she has a chance to wear it? Oh, what the heck. I’m buying it. I don’t care if it’s 85 degrees all April long.

In the swing of things

Pretty Baby: Larry Takes Dannielynn Out to Play

March 18, 2010

Spring is here, which means the flowers are blooming, the days are getting longer—and celebrity dads are taking the kids outside to blow off some steam. Larry Birkhead took his 3-1/2-year-old Dannielynn (mom is the late Anna Nicole Smith) to Coldwater Canyon Park in Beverly Hills to try and catch some rays.

Anna’s beautifully put-together daughter (nice job, Lar!) stole the show—and likely distracted onlookers from whispering about Larry’s own just-rolled-out-of-bed look. —JGZ

Hate-on-Kate Day? Kendra Latest to Attack Gosselin Mom

March 18, 2010

Mark Ballas thinks Kate is, well, kind of weird.

Sigh. Poor Kate Gosselin. She’s been catching a lot of flack for her upcoming tour of duty on Dancing With the Stars. Today, professional DWTS dancer Mark Ballas called out Gosselin for being “standoffish.” Now, in the latest reality-TV-mom smackdown, Kendra Wilkinson is taking the beleaguered multiples mom to task for her participation in the dance competition.

“You know how Kate is on Dancing With the Stars?” asked Kendra on yesterday’s Today show. “I just told my publicist today, if I were asked to go on Dancing With the Stars, I don’t think I would do it. And I would definitely say no to it because I’m that mom…I want to be there every step.”

There’s a little bit of schadenfreude involved in watching controversial pop-culture figures duke it out (Nadya Suleman’s pot-calling-kettle pontifications against Kate last year come to mind). But alas, Kendra seems to already regret her harsh statements. She posted the following tweet to try and make amends:

I guess the war of words is over—for now. —JGZ

Whatta guy, that Jesse

March 18, 2010

Faster than you can say “Vanilla Gorilla,” disgraced husband Jesse James started trying to polish his tarnished rep a day after news of his infidelity broke. Not only did he take his kids to school (yep, I’m just an average dad! Nothing sleazy about me!), he made sure the cameras caught his wedding ring.

Well, that must prove the rumors aren’t true. Thanks for clearing that up, Jess.   – SA

Branded Baby Names: “Bottega Veneta” Still up for Grabs

March 18, 2010

When Donald Trump and Marla Maples named their baby Tiffany in 1993, IN HONOR OF THE JEWELRY STORE, no one thought they were setting off a trend. Yet lo and behold, 13 years later, Kelly Rutherford named her son Hermes. Hermes, after the international luxury brand? Yes. In fact, Rutherford frequently carries Hermes bags — keep an eye out on Gossip Girl and you’ll see a Birkin slung over her wrist. To Rutherford’s credit, Hermes is a baby name of sorts. It means “messenger” in Greek. Which is apt, since “by messenger” is how I like to get the goodies I buy at my local Hermes store delivered.

Hermes (the boy, not the bag) entered the world in 2006. Which means it’s high time for the next celebrity baby-as-advertisement to be branded.  Who do you think might take the plunge? Tiffani Thiessen? Amy Adams? Bethenny Frankel (she’s where I’d place my bet)?

Baby names still up for grabs: Gucci, Rolex, Patek Philippe, Manolo, Fendi, Balenciaga, Cartier. Grab one now! Got twins? How about Van Cleef & Arpels?

Note to Claudia Schiffer: Have you considered “Burberry” for the bun in your oven?  That’s got a nice ring to it. Though if you’re going for rings, baby Bulgari might be more appropriate.
